Who we help
Accounting for overseas-trained doctors
You have moved to Australia to practise, and the tax system is new to you: a TFN, a residency question and possibly an ABN within your first year. You may still have income, accounts or a home overseas. You want it set up properly from the start.
What we do for you
- Help setting up: TFN, ABN and whether to register for GST
- Your tax return, including what to declare from overseas
- Bookkeeping and BAS once you start private or locum work
- A move to a company when your private work makes it worthwhile
What it costs
DrBooks Pro starts from $3,780 a year including GST, as a sole trader or a company. See your price.
Frequently asked questions
Can I talk to you before I start work?
Yes. A first call before you start is a good time to sort out your TFN, ABN and residency questions.
Do you handle income from overseas?
Yes. Your accountant includes what Australia taxes in your return and asks about anything overseas that might affect it.
Does my visa decide my tax residency?
Not on its own. The ATO applies residency tests to your circumstances; our residency guide explains them.
Do I need an ABN in my first year?
Only if you work as a contractor. Many overseas-trained doctors start as employees and add an ABN when they pick up locum or private work.
Do you work with specialists on the expedited pathway?
Yes. We work with overseas-trained specialists as well as GPs.
